The Civil Aviation Department of Hong Kong on Thursday (Jan 20) approved All Nippon Airways and Cathay Pacific Airways to increase passenger fuel surcharges by 9 percent to 11 percent for February.

After the adjustment, the new maximum levels of fuel surcharges for short-haul flights and long-haul flights will be 143 HK dollars and 677 HK dollars respectively, increasing 11 percent and 9 percent from the current maximum levels, said the department.

Passenger fuel surcharges seek to allow airlines to partially recover the increase in operational costs due to fluctuations in aviation fuel prices.

As the aeronautical authority in Hong Kong, the department considers and approves fuel surcharge applications from the airlines in accordance with bilateral Air Services Agreements. (1 USD is equivalent to 7.782 HKD)
