A total of 9,898 criminal cases were recorded in Macao last year, dropping by 9.42 percent over 2009, the Judiciary Police chief of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) announced on Thursday (Jan 20).

The security status of Macao for 2010 has continued to improve, as the number of most crime categories registered decreases, said Wong Sio Chak, director of the Judiciary Police.

According to the figures provided by Wong, the number of robbery cases (152), murder cases (2) and arson cases (38) recorded in Macao in 2010 dropped by 31 percent, 60 percent and 15. 5 percent, respectively.

However, as Macao's gaming industry keeps booming, crimes related to gaming have seen a continuous rising trend, Wong said, adding that the number of such cases last year was 3 percent higher than that of 2009.

Regarding this year, Wong said that the Judiciary Police will continue to enhance cooperation between police and residents, carry out more anti-crime publicity, in an effort to further improve Macao's security situation.
