Guangdong accounts for 50% of optical disc capacity in China

The total production capacity of 2.8 billion CD-R and DVD optical discs a year in Guangdong Province, southern China, accounts for 50% of the total production in China, according to a China-based chinanews.com.cn report.

Shantou, a city in the east of the province, is a main production base with a total annual capacity of 1.4 billion discs, taking up 50% of the province's total, the report indicated.

Eight makers with 134 production lines are based in the city currently, consisting of seven makers of rewritable and recordable discs with 123 production lines and a maker of read-only discs with 11 lines, the report pointed out. With Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America major overseas markets, the eight makers in Shantou recorded total production value of 9.163 billion yuan (US$1.34 billion) in 2009 and of which 740 million yuan or 8.07% was for exports, the report noted.
