A 62-year-old self-made millionaire named Liang Yongnian in Xiaolan township, Zhongshan, Guangdong Province recently got his high school diploma after two years of study to overcome his illiteracy. The class was for illiterate adults like Liang, who made millions of yuan running a wood processing plant and later a restaurant, said his opportunities would have been larger if he knew how to read and write properly.
"For 20 years, my restaurant business didn't grow, and other entrepreneurs gained a lot more. That is the different between a civilized person and an unlettered one," observed Liang.
