Co- sponsored by China Ministry of Education and Consortium Linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research (CLUSTER), and jointly organized by Tongji University and KTH, the 1st Sino-EU Workshop on Engineering Education was held at Tongji University on September 4th. The two-day meeting attracted more than 100 representatives from 18 Chinese universities which are selected into Excellent Engineers Training Program executed by China Ministry of Education and 12 universities of CLUSTER. Theme of Education for a Global World the role of innovation, Entrepreneurship in Engineering Education, The entrepreneurial University, Integration of the Knowledge Triangle, A challenge to engineering education was discussed at the workshop.
A Memorandum of Understanding for Cooperation in Engineering Education between China Ministry of Education and the CLUSTER was signed at the opening ceremony. The Sino-Europe Engineering Education Platform will be established by the above-mentioned Chinese and European universities for promoting substantial collaboration between higher engineering education institutions in both China and Europe in the fields of talents cultivation, teacher training, teaching materials development and scientific research in the areas of Climate change, environmental protection and sustainable urban development, New energy sources, civil engineering and green architecture, transportation and clean energy vehicles, electrical and information engineering, mechanical engineering, material science and engineering, life science and bioengineering, management science and engineering and creative design.
Besides, the Sino-Europe Engineering Education Platform will have co-chairpersons, designated by each party or rotated among partner universities with an office term of two years. Secretariats for the Sino-Europe Engineering Education Platform will be set up in both China and Europe, working on a two-year term. The first European secretariat on behalf of CLUSTER will be hosted by KTH - Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden). The first Chinese secretariat on behalf of the Chinese universities will be hosted by Tongji University.
In his keynote speech, President Pei of Tongji University points that world class engineers should possess international perspective and international experience. Tongji University is very pleased to join the platform to promote the engineering education of the University, and makes commitment to create more international cooperative platforms in addition to the existing seven international cooperative platforms with partners in Germany, France, Italy, Finland, UNEP and UNESCO.
The 12 member-universities of CLUSTER include Kungliga Tekniska h gskolan (KTH, Stockholm, Sweden), Aalto University (Helsinki, Finland), Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TUe, the Netherlands), cole Polytechnique F d rale de Lausanne (EPFL, Switzerland), Institut Polytechnique de Grenoble (Grenoble INP, France), Politecnico di Torino (Polito, Italy), Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Germany), Technische Universit t Darmstadt (TU-Darmstadt, Germany), Universit catholique de Louvain-Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (UCL-KUL, Belgium), Trinity College Dublin (TCD, Ireland), Universitat Politecnica de Catalunia (UPC-BarcelonaTech, Spain) and Instituto Superior T cnico (IST Lisbon, Portugal).
