Professor Flemming Besenbacher appointed Honorary Professor of Tongji

Later, Prof. Flemming Besenbacher and Prof. Yang Zhenghong, Party Secretary of the College of Material Science and Engineering, signed a cooperation memorandum, and had in-depth discussion about academic exchange, student training and science research.
Flemming Besenbacher:
1978 Graduated from the Dept. of Physics, University of Aarhus
1982 - 1983 Visiting scientist, Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque
1994 D.Sc. University of Aarhus
1996 Full Professor, Dept. of Physics and Astronomy, University of Aarhus
1993-2003 Vice-director of Center for Atomic-scale Materials Physics (CAMP)
2002- Director of Interdisciplinary Nanoscience Center (iNANO)

Since the beginning of the 80s, Prof. Besenbacher has performed groundbreaking research in the field of surface science. His research has provided atomic-level information on fundamental chemical processes occurring in, e.g. industrial catalysts or biological self-assembly processes. Prof. Besenbacher s group has built one of the best instruments in the world, the so-called Aarhus Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), for visualizing the structure and movement of atoms on surfaces.

The fantastic resolution of such STM movies is both visually tantalizing and unique for providing important scientific insight.
