The Seminar on Media Consumption and Youth, hosted by the Public Opinion Research Center of Shanghai International Studies University and organized by the Media and Communication Research Center of Fudan University was held at SISU on Oct. 27-28, 2008.
Prof. Zhang Shuguang, Vice President of SISU, Prof. Li Liangrong from Fudan University College of Journalism and Communication, Dean of China s Journalism Education Directing Committee, Prof. Huang Dan, Dean of Information and Communication Research Center of Fudan University, Ms. Katrin Altmeyer and Ms. Zhu Yi from the Heinrich Boll Foundation attended opening ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Prof. Guo Ke, Dean of the Public Opinion Research Center of Shanghai International Studies University.
Participants came from all over the world and many are famous scholars in this field, including Prof. Dane Claussen from Point Park University and also the chief editor from the American mainstream communication journal Journalism and Communication Education, Dr. Karsten Giese, Chief Editor of the German Journal of Current Chinese Affairs, Prof. Larry Strelitz from South African Roders University, Prof. Violet B. Valdez, Dean of the Asian Journalism Research Center of the University of Ateneo De Manila at Philipine, Prof. Chen Ni from Hong Kong City University and Prof. Weber from Australia. Other attendants include Prof. Bu Wei from China s Academy of Social Science, Prof. Lu Ye, Prof, Cheng Shian, Prof. Li Shuanglong from Fudan University College of Journalism and Communication, Prof. Zhan Jian from China s Youth Politics College, Prof. Zhou Xiaopu from Renmin University, and scholars from Shanghai University, China s Media University. Mr. Wang Keqin, famous Journalist from Beijing Economics Times and Mr. Zhang Aixue from Beijing Youth Newspaper also attended the meeting representing practitioners of journalism. Faculty members and graduates from the College of Journalism and Communication of SISU are present as well.
On the symposium, participants from home and abroad were engaged in heated discussions about the research methodologies on media and youth, the media impact n the youth, esp. the Internet. As attendants are from various parts of the world, broad discussions were also held about media impact on the youth in Europe, America and China, and participants exchanged their ideas about the research traditions in these regions.
Scholars from home and abroad all praised highly this seminar. They think it not only promote academic exchanges in this field among international researchers, but also help them communicate in methodologies. The collection of papers presented at the seminar will be published bilingually and is titled Media Consumption and Youth.
