THE Shanghai Charity Foundation will conduct a citywide survey on the attitudes local people have toward giving.

The survey will be carried out over two weeks, starting Sunday, foundation officials said yesterday.

Fudan University and Shanghai Social Science Institute volunteers will coordinate the polling.

Some 300 student volunteers will question 9,000 people between age 15 and 60 in Shanghai's 18 districts and Chongming County. Respondents must have lived in Shanghai for more than six months.

The results of the survey will be announced in December and will serve as a reference point for the charity foundation's future projects.

Organizers will also mail questionnaires to 1,000 local enterprises.

Each person will be asked a set of 12 questions, including his or her participation in charity affairs in the past two years.

The respondents will be rewarded with an umbrella for their time and effort.

The foundation has appealed to the people of Shanghai to respond to the questions. During two trials carried out at three venues in September, volunteers found that many people simply refused to be questioned.

This is the second time the foundation is carrying out a citywide survey since 2002.
