Director General of IAEA Awarded Honorary Doctorate of Tsinghua

Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),was awarded Tsinghua University Honorary Doctorate on December 5.

The awarding ceremony of the doctorate was held in the main building. Tsinghua President Gu Binglin awarded the diploma to Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei. Tsinghua Vice President Xie Weihe hosted the ceremony. Professor Wang Dazhong, Honorary Chairman of the University Council, also attended the ceremony.

Dr. ElBaradei delivered a speech to The Tsinghua Forum, entitled Nuclear Power: Look to the Future after the awarding ceremony.

The Tsinghua Forum features speakers who address a wide range of topics, including science and technology, economics, and society and culture as they relate to the development of China and the world. The Tsinghua Forum convenes four times a year.

Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei is the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), an intergovernmental organization that is part of the United Nations system. He was appointed to the office effective 1 December 1997, and reappointed to a third term in September 2005. In October 2005, Dr. ElBaradei and the IAEA were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for their efforts to prevent nuclear energy from being used for military purposes and to ensure that nuclear energy for peaceful purposes is used in the safest possible way."
