1.Seven Tsinghua research achievements won 2006 National Science and Technology Awards. Of the seven awards, the Project Study on Carbon Nanotube Macrostructure by Professor Wu Dehai and his colleagues won the National Science Award second prize and the Project 10MW High Temperature Gas-cooled Test Reactor by Academician Wang Dazhong and his colleagues in collaboration with four companies and institutes won the National Scientific and Technological Progress Award second prize.

Tsinghua continues to rank first among China s universities for its scientific fund, for the number of research papers cited, according to SCI, for the number of papers collected by EI and ISTP, and for the number of patents granted.

The Department of Electrical Engineering s Professor Zhang Boming s New Generation Energy Management System with Three Dimensional Coordination, Key Innovations and Applications for the Electric Power Grid Project was selected one of China s Universities Ten Great Scientific Achievements in 2007.

Chinese President Hu Jintao wrote a letter to Tsinghua Professor Zhang Guangdou, renowned water resources and hydroelectric engineering expert, extending best wishes for his 95th birthday and praising him for his dedication for over 70 years to water resources and hydroelectric engineering education and development in China.

Eight German graduate students who took part in a joint Tsinghua - RWTH Aachen masters program received their degrees at a graduation ceremony held at RWTH Aachen on November 16. Tsinghua-K.U.Leuven Week, a major communication event between Tsinghua University and Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (K.U.Leuven), started November 19 at K.U.Leuven in Belgium. It is the first time Tsinghua has held a Tsinghua Week in a foreign country.

6. A celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of Work Healthily for the Motherland for 50 years was held in Tsinghua s Auditorium on November 29. The slogan, well known by all Tsinghua students, professors, and staff, was created 50 years ago by Professor Jiang Nanxiang, Tsinghua University s President from 1952 to 1966. A torch relay by students, faculty and staff following the ceremony demonstrated that Professor Jiang Nianxing s sports spirit was still very much alive and still thriving at Tsinghua fifty years later on the eve of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

2007's Ten Top Tsinghua News Stories 8. China s Ministry of Education determined in its first evaluation that Tsinghua qualifies as having 22 First Category National Key Disciplines, ranking first nationwide.

9. Tsinghua University Professor Meng Anming and Professor Zhang Xi were newly elected to the Chinese Academy of Sciences. Professor Lei Zhidong was elected to the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor Qian Yi, Professor Liu Guanzhong, and Professor Hua Chengying won Renowned Teacher of the Nation awards. Tsinghua s total number of academicians and renowned teachers both rank first among China s universities. Nineteen courses at Tsinghua were evaluated as national elite courses. Up to now, a total of 61 courses were evaluated as national elite courses, also ranking first among China s universities.

2007's Ten Top Tsinghua News Stories 10. Tsinghua continued to expand its poverty alleviation program network which extends education aid to poor counties in China. The University now has 217 distance education stations in remote and impoverished regions throughout China.
