On October 22, State Council Premier Wen Jiabao visited WISDRI Engineering & Research Incorporation Ltd. (WISDRI) to conduct an official survey of the company s operations. During the inspection, Premier Wen remarked: What the country thinks and is concerned about, we should think and be concerned about. I hope you will all make contributions towards pushing forward the structural readjustment and industry upgrade of the steel industry.
At approximately 4:00 p.m., Premier Wen, accompanied by provincial and municipal level leaders including secretary of the Hubei provincial Party committee Luo Qingquan, deputy provincial party committee secretary and Hubei Province governor Li Hongzhong, traveled to WISDRI s headquarters. Upon arriving, the leaders received a warm reception from WISDRI Chairman and CP secretary Xiang Mingwu, company President Xiao Bai and several other WISDRI executives.
In WISDRI s show room, Premier Wen listened to a briefing given by Xiang Mingwu on the company s development history as well as its current situation. Xiang stated that WISDRI has relied on independent innovation to achieve rapid development, and has already made substantial achievements in key areas such as steel technology upgrading and environmental protection.
Following the briefing, Premier Wen visited the company s automation department and sat down to have to cordial talk with WISDRI s first line designers and other workers present. During that time, he stated that the primary problem facing the steel industry at the moment is excess capacity, and the biggest task ahead is realizing the structural readjustment of the entire industry. Efforts should primarily center on the modernization and concentration of the industry, with a particular focus on implementing energy saving and environmental protection measures. Premier Wen also stated that the structural readjustment of the steel industry places higher demands on steel engineering design. For this reason, the industry must first aim its sights at obtaining and utilizing the world s most advanced technology and gaining competitive advantages. Second, the industry must develop new technologies to facilitate energy saving and environmental protection. The premier stated openly: Even though we now have excess capacity in the steel industry, we still don t have an abundance of steel industry technical personnel with the creativity and global perspective necessary to guide the enterprise to a leading position internationally. These kinds of individuals are not in over capacity. On the contrary, we have a shortage. I hope that each and every technician can strive towards this direction. Wen s comments received warm applause from the workers in attendance.
Upon departing from the automation department, Premier Wen met with an enthusiastic farewell team. Taking the microphone once again, he said to the workers present: China s steel industry is facing extensive structural readjustment. First, the industry will become more concentrated and shift away from the current state of having many small, dispersed enterprises. Second, we will realize modernization by creating the world s most advanced steelmaking technology and producing high quality products. Third, the industry will further promote and popularize environmental protection and energy saving work particularly in the areas of reducing carbon emissions and cutting down on pollution. The steel industry s structural readjustment will also raise the requirements on design organizations. We must move towards this direction and strive to design the world s most modernized steel plants according to stringent specifications that incorporate energy saving and emissions reduction. He urged everyone present: Now is the time for you to use your wisdom and bring out your strength. What the country thinks and is concerned about, we should think and be concerned about. I hope you will all make contributions towards pushing forward the structural readjustment and industry upgrade of the steel industry. Premier Wen s comments were once again met with thunderous applause.
During the inspection, Premier Wen repeatedly shook hands and greeted the workers in attendance. He also actively encouraged group photos be taken to mark the occasion. The warm and sincere image of the premier won popular support among the people.
