From February 27 to March 4, President Zhang Jie led a delegation to visit Japan upon invitation.

During the visit in Japan, President Zhang Jie attended the Sino-Japanese Sci. &Tech. Cooperation Symposium, held by Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST). He delivered a keynote address titled "Thinking and Practice on Production, Teaching and Research of Shanghai Jiao Tong University".Meanwhile, President Zhang Jie led the SJTU delegation to visit renowned universities including Waseda University, Chuo University and Showa Women's University, as well as enterprises such as NSK Ltd., SHOEI CHEMICAL INC., SMC Corporation and Nippon Keidanren. Multiple consensuses on cooperation and development have been reached. The visit achieved a complete success.

Besides, President Zhang Jie also visited Chinese students and scholars in Japan. He encouraged them to concern themselves with national construction and seize the opportunity to serve the country with his own experience.

After major earthquakes the following tsunami and nuclear contamination hit Japan on March 11, Secretary Ma Dexiu of CPC SJTU Committee, and on behalf of SJTU, President Zhang Jie sent letters of consolation to Japanese universities, enterprises, friends groups as well as scholars and Chinese students in Japan. They expressed the wish that Japanese people would tide over the difficulties soon, and people in the disaster areas would rebuild their homes and restore a calm and peaceful life.
