Rokeya Sarani in Mirpur, was crowded by workers from more than 20 factories, who were protesting against closure of SQ Sweaters Ltd without any prior notice. This in turn virtually paralyzed the street for the entire day due to traffic congestion.
Infuriated from the death of one of the co-workers forced to work on a night-shift, employees of the garment producing factory had earlier posed a two day strike. Taking advantage of the Bangladesh Labour Law 2006, the management declared a closure of the factory under the pretext of observing illegal strike.
It was to counteract to this decision that the workers planned a widespread agitation boycotting work and claiming an alteration of the decision taken. Workers from other factories also joined the protest to stand united against the frequent injustice delivered by factory owners.
