According to latest statistics, cropping pattern of cotton has undergone positive changes whereby cotton areas have expanded considerably in states like Punjab and Andhra Pradesh.
This is because of easy access to pest-protected Bt-cotton hybrids which have replaced the conventional varieties. Over 85 lakh hectares as against the usual 83 lakh have been sown with the improved cotton seeds. Sources said further sowing is still on.
It is thanks to the fairly normal and well-distributed monsoon in the country that cotton sowing has got the much-needed boost. The average rainfall during the important month of July was a good 97 percent compared to the 95 percent foretold by the IMD.
