Expressing surprise at the fact that the jute industry of Pakistan — the third largest exporter of jute products in the world — does not have R&D facility, Humayun Mazhar, Chairman of Pakistan Jute Mills Association said jute sector needed this support wing in order to keep up with technological advancements.
Humayun said R&D facility is a must for the jute industry which exported goods worth Rs 900 million in the current fiscal. He added that jute sector was very much a part of the textiles industry and therefore, it must be provided with a research department.
The Chairman said that jute products were made of a natural fibre and were eco-friendly and biodegradable. Apart from this, Jute geo-textiles are used for insulation, preventing erosion and providing stability to the soil.
