Agriculture Minister Rugare Gumbo revealed that a legal framework is being prepared to facilitate the functioning of cotton industry.
Cotton industry lately has been facing several problems especially illegal marketing by financed farmers. Thus, these growers are unable to fulfill their contracts.
Minister said that this new structure will help curb the existing concerns and smoothen the operations in the cotton sector. Framework is expected to be released soon.
Though contract farming has provided a boost to the yield, farmers opt to sell their product to merchants offering higher rates.
Reportedly, National Cotton Ginners' Association and the Ministry are working together to draft the framework that will be beneficial to the industry and also the farmers.
Zimbabwe, currently producing around 300,000 tons annually, is targeting per year yield of one million tons by 2010.
