Surat's 'zari' (embroidery) market is witnessing big changes with the introduction of computerized machines that help embroider complicated designs with ease.
The embroidery work done manually by the weavers of Surat, the textile hub of Gujarat, often met with road blocks when faced with an intricate design pattern. But with the new e-machines, this task would be accomplished with ease.
A total of 35,000 such machines have been installed in Surat and weavers are being trained to use this new methodology. An estimated $185 million has been spent to acquire these machines.
According to insiders, the need for buying these machines sprang from a shift in customer choice. More and more people are getting attracted to complex patterns in designs. Again, festive seasons put additional pressure on traditional embroidery workers to come up with something unique to attract buyers.
