"We understand the heritage and tradition of the Pony brand and we intend to create a unique new collection of Pony brand athletic apparel that incorporates authentic sports styling with high-quality fabrics and a variety of details, trims and applications that bridge the gap between Pony's storied past and current industry trends."
The deal was consummated under the guidance of the licensing specialists of The Meriwether Group. "After we spoke with Pony as to what they were planning for the brand, we quickly identified a few targeted companies as potential licensees. International Apparel Group stood out head and shoulders above the others."
"Their past experience with professional athletes and sports apparel, such as Converse, ABA and Original Gear, and their understanding of how to work under strict licensing guidelines made them particularly attractive," explained Ken Barker, president of The Meriwether Group.
Pony was founded in 1972 and quickly became one the most distinctive sports brands in the world. Among the many athletes who wore Pony shoes were Pele, Muhammad Ali, George Foreman, David Thompson, Darryl Dawkins, Spud Webb, Dan Marino, Lawrence Taylor, Reggie Jackson, and Tracy Austin. Pony is a designer, distributor, and marketer of high-performance and casual athletic footwear and apparel for men, women and children.
