The European Basketball Championship runs from the 3rd to the 16th September in Spain and this year the host team will be turning out in new outfits. Their sponsor Li-Ning (China) is providing the players with strips in antimicrobial function materials. Sportswear Argentona (Spain) supplied the fabrics in Trevira Bioactive, while Austral (Spain) has made up the garment parts.
Following their triumph in the World Championships in Japan last year, the Spanish intend to use their home advantage and take the European title as well. Under their trainer Pepu Hernández the team is grateful for any help they can get and hopes to gain advantages from the functionality of their playing strips, as reported by the largest Spanish sports paper, Marca.
Following the first trials, Marca describes the new outfit as a textile miracle. Li-Ning have spared neither expense nor effort to give the team "intelligent strips", in which the players can still feel fit even when performing at their peak.
Today breathability and temperature control are taken for granted in top quality sportswear, since it is important in high performance sports that the clothes do not stick to the skin when the body perspires. Optimal fabric constructions mean that sweat can evaporate, keeping the body cool and dry, yet at the same time preventing it from chilling when at rest.
These new strips, however, are capable of even more: the material possesses a permanent antimicrobial effect, supplied by a silver additive in the fibre raw material. The textiles are kind to the skin and protect against the unpleasant odours caused by perspiring. The fact they stay fresh for longer enhances the feel good effect when making extreme physical efforts.
Li-Ning, the largest Chinese sports brand in the People's Republic, provided the strips for the basketball players at last year's World Championships. It has also made arrangements with the Spanish national Olympic Committee on outfitting the Olympic team for the 2008 Games in Peking.
