Handicraft industry is struggling to survive and many influential celebs expressed concern over the matter.
Reportedly around 14 categories of handicrafts are already extinct in Sanaa. al-Ayzari, member of a local council and head of Sana’a sheikhs, states, “If the Ministry of Culture does not protect Yemeni handicrafts, they will vanish.”
Motahar Taqi Al-Din, Director of General Organization for Tourism Development says that taxes are the key problem for craftsmen.
Experts say that the same products are manufactured outside the country at lower costs. Besides, the machines make ten pieces in one day, whereas the artisans take ten days to make one.
Analysts further said that even if taxes are cut down, handicraft industry would grow only if it produced quality items and kept up with the latest international trends.
Craftsmen needed to adopt new technologies and develop innovative products.
