The Consumer Price Index (CPI) in August rose by 0.3 per cent over July 2007. This magnitude of month-to-month change was within the range of those recorded in earlier months before July 2007. A large increase of 2.1 per cent was recorded in July 2007, due partly to the rise in the Goods and Service Tax (GST).
As a result of higher prices of leather and travel goods as well as cosmetics and toilet requisites, the recreation & other index rose by 0.3 per cent.
Dearer ready-made garments and footwear raised the clothing & footwear index by 1.5 per cent. Health care cost edged up by 0.2 per cent due mainly to dearer Chinese herbs.
On a seasonally adjusted basis, the consumer price index in August 2007 was 0.3 per cent higher compared with July 2007.
