Men armed with weapon attacked Model Town Hospital in Lahore on September 26 and seized jewellery from a lady doctor and from other female patients. The mishap impelled Pakistan’s District Health Department to pass instructions asking female doctors and nurses in Government hospitals to not wear jewelry while at work.
This was not the first instance of robbery; female staffs in hospitals have met with frequent incidents of this kind. However, the opinion expressed by district authorities has distressed them immensely.
Female doctors from various hospitals suggest increasing the security level, instead of prohibiting women to sport ornaments. This proposition seemed quite logical since the hospital authorities would in any case find it difficult to implement the rule on patients and visitors.
A viable alternative can also be to arm the guards and to thoroughly check the people entering the hospital. The use of ID cards for visitors will also help reduce the risk for such unprecedented mischance.
