A large tanker was hit by a crane-carrying barge on the West Sea off Taean County on December 7, and about 10,500 tons of crude oil leaked out. Emergency cleanup efforts have picked up speed assisted by a continued influx of volunteers and foreign aid.
The authorities have been working round the clock trying to finish the emergency cleanup operations, which is aided by an industrial absorbent cloth.
Unique permeable properties of this special cloth have proved to be major asset during this unfortunate incident. However, due to the sudden surge demand of absorption cloth, the supply is not able to keep pace and is seriously falling behind.
A few companies like Yuhan Kimberley are expanding production of the cloth to fulfill the requirement. Welcron, which till date never manufactured the cloth, is producing the same in huge quantities.
3M Korea is also trying to jack up the production while also importing the same from its parent country, US. China and Japan have also pledged to send 65 tons and 10 tons of absorbents in aid, respectively.
