In the last 30 years, India has witnessed a drastic revolution in fashion industry. There has been a perceptible improvement in use of quality textiles and materials by the Indian fashion designers. With the change of time, fashion trends have also changed, and so is the thinking of the consumers.
Apart from the traditional concept of designing a garment with artistic value to satisfy the consumers, now designers focus on adding some functional value by utilizing new textile concepts developed through the emerging areas like 'smart and intelligent textiles' so as to set up a new trend for growth for upcoming fashion entrepreneurs.
Fashion designers today clearly equate themselves with the vision of electrical and electronic engineers, material scientists, textile engineers, chemical engineers, IT professionals etc. Global market for smart fabrics and interactive textiles has exceeded US$640 million by 2008 against the projected figure of US$485 million.
