The 14th Cross-Strait Financial Symposium Held in Beijing

The 14th Cross-Strait Financial Symposium, co-organized by China Society for Finance and Banking, Chung-Hua Institute for Economic Research and Taipei Foundation of Finance, was held in Beijing on November 25 and 26.

Mr. XIANG Junbo, Vice President of China Society for Finance and Banking and Governor of the Agricultural Bank of China, and Mr. SUN Yafu, Vice President of the Association for Relations across the Taiwan Strait, addressed the symposium. Mr. MA Delun, Vice President of China Society for Finance and Banking and the Deputy Governor of the People s Bank of China (PBC) attended the closing ceremony and presented a speech.

On part of the Mainland, representatives from financial authorities and more than 70 financial institutions and experts in relevant areas participated in the meeting; on part of Taiwan, the delegation headed by the Ms. ZHANG Xiulian, Board Chairperson of Taiwan Financial Holdings Group and formed by members from financial authorities and the banking, securities and insurance sectors, were present at the seminar.

At the symposium, in-depth communication and discussion were conducted on the implications of the global financial crisis, the future of financial holding companies, the development and blueprint of insurance deposit system, hot issues on banking, securities and insurance, as well as the current situation and prospect for cross-strait financial cooperation.

Since 1994, the Cross-Strait Financial Symposium has been convened by turns by the Mainland and Taiwan, providing an influential platform for communication of the financial sectors across the strait and making contributions in promoting cross-strait financial exchange and cooperation.

At present, the Mainland has approved the access and business operation of 2 Taiwan-funded banks, 3 life insurance companies jointly funded by the Mainland and Taiwan and 1 Taiwan-funded property insurance company in the Mainland, and also approved the access of representative offices of 7 Taiwan-funded banks, 25 representative offices of 14 Taiwan-funded securities companies and 17 representative offices of 14 Taiwan-funded insurance companies in the Mainland. Commercial banks cross the strait initiated direct business link in 2002.
