On December 17, 2008, Governor of the People s Bank of China (PBC), Mr. ZHOU Xiaochuan, met with the President of the World Bank, Mr. Zoellick, who was paying a visit in Beijing. They exchanged views on world economic situations, handling the global financial crisis, counter-cyclical measures and China s cooperation with the World Bank.
ZHOU introduced to Zoellick China s macroeconomic circumstance and the measures taken to mitigate the impact of the international financial crisis. ZHOU acclaimed the World Bank s long-term support for China s economic and social development, and pointed out that the World Bank should continue to play its due role of the largest financial institution aiming to promote development, and help the developing countries take on the challenges posed by the financial crisis, maintain financial stability and promote economic development.
Zoellick spoke highly of China s constructive contribution in coping with the global financial crisis and pointed out that balancing employment promotion and industrial restructuring is very important during such a crisis. He also emphasized that all countries should avoid protectionism and consolidate cooperation and noted that World Bank valued China s role and influence, and would like to further strengthen its partnership with China.
