1.27m volunteers

THE Universiade organizing committee will complete the recruitment and training of 1.27 million volunteers, including 1 million non-official volunteers, before June next year, a record number in Universiade history. Shenzhen will set up 750 volunteer service stations before the games, which are due to open Aug. 12 next year.

Sixteen FIFU officials are in town to inspect the more than 60 Universiade venues.

Hairy crabs

A TOTAL of 12.34 tons of hairy crabs were exported to Hong Kong through Shenzhen ports last month, a 36 percent increase over the same period last year, according to the exit-entry inspection and quarantine bureau. The export price was US$21.01 per kilogram, a year-on-year 30 percent growth. October is considered the best time to eat hairy crabs in China.

Illegal immigrant

HUANGGANG Checkpoint yesterday detained a man who allegedly hid on the top of an outbound container truck, the department said yesterday. The 17-year-old Guizhou native, identified only as Zhang, was allegedly attempting to enter Hong Kong.

Greetings to seniors

A CAMPAIGN to greet centenarians was launched yesterday by the city civil affairs bureau for the coming Double Ninth Festival on Saturday when respects are paid to elders.

Bureau officials will visit four 100-year-olds in Luohu and Futian districts, and another two over 100 years in Nanshan District.

The oldest man in Shenzhen is Peng Tian, 107, in Henggang Subdistrict, Longgang District. There are 75 centenarians in Shenzhen, 67 are women and 8 men. Longgang District is where most centenarians live and all of the 19 are women.
