YANTIAN police detained a container truck driver who blocked the Yantian ao Tunnel on Huiyan Expressway on Monday, threatening to blow up the tunnel with a gas cylinder and petrol can.
The middle-aged driver, identified as Xiang, was charged with threatening public security, the Daily Sunshine reported yesterday.
Xiang parked his truck in the middle of the tunnel Monday afternoon and poured gasoline over himself and his vehicle, the paper said.
When police arrived, he had locked himself in the truck, lighting a cigarette and waving a lighter.
Police later called his manager to the scene. Xiang surrendered after two hours of negotiations.
He had been employed by a Yantian District transport company in May, the paper said.
Xiang, who had been drinking heavily Monday morning, complained his truck repeatedly broke down, and claimed the company was responsible.
Police sealed the tunnel for two hours during the incident. (Li Hao)
