SHENZHEN Metro would allow people with a disability certificate or those with serious disabilities to take the Metro for free, a Southern Metropolis Daily report said.
The policy applies to all disabled passengers, including non-hukou holders, with a certificate issued by the China Disabled Persons Federation, a Metro spokesperson said.
Meanwhile, the city s transport commission has suggested the government should offer free Metro and bus rides to all disabled people without Shenzhen hukou. The suggestion is awaiting government approval, the commission said in a letter to lawmaker Zhu Yutong on Monday.
The rules were revised after two disabled men filed a lawsuit against Shenzhen Metro over discounts being rejected by the company in August. A Futian court was expected to hear the claims this month while the company hoped to settle the matter out of court.
According to regulations issued by the provincial government in 2007, the visually impaired and people with first-degree (serious) physical disabilities are eligible to travel free on all public transport on presenting a disability certificate.
However, according to Shenzhen Metro regulations introduced in August, only the visually impaired and people with first or second-degree physical disabilities and a disability certificate are allowed free Metro travel. (Wang Yuanyuan)
