A SHENZHEN schoolgirl is in critical condition in Guangdong Provincial People s Hospital in Guangzhou with a rare blood condition, the Daily Sunshine reported Thursday.
Huang Jiayin, 7, had been in a coma for 22 days
Huang started vomiting with diarrhea Sept. 21 and lost consciousness shortly after, according to the girl s mother Chen Meixue.
Huang was immediately taken to hospital but there was no change in her condition for the following 10 days, Chen told the paper.
She has contracted a rare blood condition known as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which means blood in her body decreased without reasons, resulting in the failure of a number of organs, said a doctor identified as Guo at the hospital.
The cause of the condition was unknown, Guo said. It has been reported in Argentina and the Netherlands. No confirmed information about the disease was recorded in Chinese hospitals, he said.
He said only two cases of the condition had been reported in Guangdong Province in the past.
It costs the family at least 10,000 yuan (US$1,490) a day for Huang s medical bills, Chen said. She could die at any minute if no effective treatment is found, the doctor said.
The family has spent more than 200,000 yuan on her treatment so far. We still owe the hospital more than 100,000 yuan, but we can t really afford the high medical expenses, said her father, who supports the family by doing odd jobs. (SD News)
