BADLY POSITIONED traffic lights at an intersection on Shenhui Road in Henggang, Longgang District, have led drivers to inadvertently cross against red lights.
The traffic lights were installed at the same height as a footbridge less than five meters away. This prevented drivers from seeing the lights until they reached the pedestrian crossing, the Daily Sunshine reported Thursday.
There were many skid marks on the zebra crossing.
In two hours, reporters saw 15 cars cross against the lights.
Finding themselves on the pedestrian crossing, many drivers opted to continue on through the lights. There were no traffic cameras at the intersection, the paper said.
Nearby residents were unable to say whether the footbridge had been built before or after the traffic lights were installed.
Henggang traffic police said there had been many complaints about the location of the traffic lights and the situation had been reported to district traffic police but they did not know when the situation would be rectified.
