THE city s housing and construction bureau has issued a notice of punishment to 1,472 households that it says made fraudulent claims in applying for government low-cost housing.
The bureau would announce the specific punishment measures soon, a Shenzhen Special Zone Daily report said.
However, the bureau did not release the details of the households, which were eliminated in the second round of official checks on their eligibility for low-cost housing.
According to Shenzhen rules governing low-cost housing, households or individuals caught making fraudulent claims in their applications will be subject to a 5,000-yuan (US$751) fine.
Additionally, offenders will be disqualified from submitting a new application for three years.
The bureau was classifying the offenders and would mete out heavy punishment, the paper said.
A total of 6,385 households passed the second round of official checks on their eligibility for government low-cost housing. These applications were made public last week for further public scrutiny.
However, it has been discovered that applicants from 49 households on the shortlist, all of whom hold Shenzhen hukou, did not live in Shenzhen. This had triggered a debate among residents over their eligibility to apply, a Daily Sunshine report said yesterday.
Some did not even work in the city, the paper said.
However, the bureau said hukou holders working or living outside Shenzhen were eligible to apply, citing regulations.
The second round of public scrutiny will continue until Nov. 4 before the final round of government assessment begins.
Applicants must be assessed at subdistrict, district and city levels before being approved to buy a low-cost home. The final assessment will verify the applicants bank accounts, social insurance, stock trades and housing.
Residents can call 8351-1111 to report irregularities.
