A TOTAL of 20 vans providing boxed lunches will do the rounds at city business communities every noon from Monday, serving lunches at cheaper prices, Thursday s Daily Sunshine reported.

The 20 vans will operate during lunch hour every day at fixed locations in Huaqiangbei and Futian s Central Business District, Renminnan in Luohu District and the Shenzhen Hi-tech Industrial Park in Nanshan District.

They will provide meals for up to 12,000 people in the four areas, according to the city s commission of science, industry, trade and information.

The service was being provided by two companies, Shenzhen Jinguyuan Co. and Shenzhen Shadu Co., under strict standards, management and government supervision to ensure food quality.

Each boxed meal, including meat and vegetables, will be priced at 9 to 12 yuan (US$1.35-1.81) 10 to 15 percent cheaper than similar meals sold at restaurants.

Research by the commission revealed that about 3 million residents have breakfast and lunch outside their homes, many having to queue for their meals. The vans are fast and convenient, an unidentified commission official said.

The number of vans would be increased to 70 in three months, providing meals for 40,000 people, with an expected 150 vans in a year s time, the official said.

Meanwhile, a greater variety of dishes would be introduced over the next three months, including soup, desserts, hotdogs and salad, he said.

Some 2,000 boxed lunches were provided on a trial basis Wednesday at Tian an Digital City in Futian District.
