Phone recharge
A FREE 100-yuan (US$15) mobile phone recharge to be given by the government to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Shenzhen Special Economic Zone has been delayed for at least a month.
It is the second time the gift recharge has been delayed.
The government has attributed the delay to the huge number of applications.
Smuggler detained
HUANGGANG Customs detained an inbound Hong Kong traveler in the early hours of Thursday. Customs said the suspect was carrying more than 70 memory cards and 3,000 integrated circuits tied around his waist.
Huanggang Customs has uncovered more than 3,000 smuggling cases involving more than 50 million yuan this year.
Mosquito campaign
NANSHAN has launched a weeklong campaign against mosquitoes in an attempt to prevent the spread of chikungunya fever, caused by a virus carried by the insects.
From Monday to Sunday, all communities are required to disinfect areas where mosquitoes can breed. Flower markets, litchi forests, construction sites, old villages, hospitals and schools will be the focus of the campaign, the district disease control and prevention department said.
The disease is not usually fatal but muscle and joint pain caused by the disease can last for weeks or months.
Emissions checks
THE city s environment commission has provided 24 sets of emission detection scopes to Shenzhen Bus Group. The scopes can help bus drivers keep an eye on exhaust emissions to see whether moving buses meet emission standards.
Inspectors can judge pollution levels by the color of the emissions.
Boar drowns
A WILD boar drowned near Minsk World in Shatoujiao, Yantian District, on Wednesday.
The boar was seen struggling in the sea at around 8 a.m., unable to climb out of the water. By the time six soldiers dragged the animal out of the water, it had drowned.
