SHENZHEN will improve its road signs to provide more detailed information for motorists.

According to a draft of the technical standards for Shenzhen road signs released Monday, city street signs will include the names of roads, districts or areas, scenic spots, nearby transport terminals and road surface features.

Road signs at entrances to expressways will include the names and identification numbers of expressways and the cities to which they connect.

On provincial and national roads, the transport authority will install road signs 30 to 80 meters before intersections, showing road names, regions and road surface features.

Road signs will be placed 300 to 500 meters in advance of major intersections. In addition, the draft includes plans for signs for pedestrians and bicycle riders. At intersections without traffic lights, the transport authority will designate areas for vehicles to slow down and give way.

Further information (in Chinese) can be downloaded from the transport commission s Web site at http://www.sztb.gov.cn. Suggestions can be e-mailed to szjtghzx@163.com or mailed to Room 1416, Shenzhen Transport Management and Control Center, Zhuzilin Road, Futian District.

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 20.
