A BAO AN clinic recently had its business license revoked after it was found to have performed abortions without a license.

The matter came to light following doctors at the clinic left a pregnant woman unattended on an operating table for three hours after she refused to pay more fees.

A special task force headed by Wang Shuiming, deputy Party chief of the municipal committee of the CPC, was set up Monday to investigate the incident and regulate the industry, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

The clinic reached a settlement to pay 16,000 yuan (US$2,388) in compensation to Yang Tong, 22, a factory worker in Bao an District, the paper said.

Yang went to Runkang Clinic in Xixiang Subdistrict on Oct. 23 for an abortion. She paid 840 yuan for the surgery but after an examination, the clinic demanded another 2,100 yuan for two additional procedures prior to the abortion.

She refused to pay, saying she didn t have the money, according to her boyfriend, who identified himself as Liu. The doctor, whose identity was not disclosed, left Yang on the table for more than three hours with her hands and feet tied to the bed. She wasn t taken off the table until I told them I would call police, Liu said.

Yang was later transferred to Xixiang Hospital.

A preliminary investigation by Bao an District health authorities found that the clinic wasn t licensed to perform abortions. The authority closed the clinic Oct. 27 and said the clinic operators would be punished.

The special task force would target other clinics which were reported to have performed abortions without licenses.

According to Chinese-language media reports, clinics like these abound in Bao an, targeting young women workers in the district with advertisement cheap fees for surgery. (SD News)
