Worker impaled

A MAN was impaled on a wooden stick when a wall collapsed in Bao an District. The man, named Tan, 35, a native of Chongqing, was working at a hardware factory in Gongming. He was buried in the collapse when the stick penetrated his chest when workers were demolishing factory buildings. Although in a critical condition, CT scans showed there were no serious internal injuries, doctor Lin Shaolin of the Shenzhen People s Hospital said yesterday.

Post-Ph.D stations

THE city has recently set up 13 post doctorate science research stations in 13 government agencies, the largest number since 1995, the city s labor resources and social security administration said yesterday. There are so far 68 post doctorate scientific research stations and 40 post doctorate innovation bases in the city, the largest number in Guangdong. These stations are involved in biomedicine, finance, electronic information and computers, offering a platform for the city to attract and train high-level professionals, as well as boosting high-tech development.

Each candidate at the stations will be offered a subsidy of 110,000 yuan (US$16,418) a year by the municipal government.

Birthday death

A MAN surnamed Li celebrating his 21st birthday was stabbed to death in a scuffle with others at a barbecue restaurant in Guanlan Subdistrict, Bao an, yesterday. Two of Li s friends were injured. Li, who worked for a mobile phone parts factory, invited 14 friends to his birthday celebrations in Xintian Village, according to his cousin. While drinking, they quarreled with a neighboring table of 10 people. Li was stabbed several times in the chest and back. He was pronounced dead at Guanlan People s Hospital.

Police are investigating.
