A MAN was sentenced to 14 years in prison after he was convicted of intentional injury and found guilty of throwing sulfuric acid over his former girlfriend.
The man, surnamed Wang, 42, was ordered by the court to pay the victim 510,000 yuan (US$76,479) in damages.
Wang met the then 25-year-old victim, Zeng, in January 2008. They quickly established a romantic relationship, but in March the same year, Zeng told Wang she wanted to break up with him. Wang threatened to demand compensation for psychological trauma a number of times, which Zeng ignored.
On March 24, 2008, when Zeng and a colleague were walking near the Lianhua Subdistrict Office in Futian District, Wang approached them and suddenly threw sulfuric acid over Zeng, causing burns to her head, neck, right ear and chest. Wang then fled.
Some acid splashed back on Wang, seriously injuring one of his eyes, a Shenzhen Special Zone Daily report said.
Police caught Wang on a train from Guangzhou to Tianjin on March 2 this year. (SD News)
