AUTHORITIES said buildings at a government-subsidized housing estate were not safety hazards despite cracks in walls and ceilings of more than 30 households just two months after the homeowners moved in.
Investigations conducted at the Shenyuncun housing estate in Nanshan District found the cracks were quality defects and caused by improper interior decoration by the property owners, the housing and construction bureau told a news conference Wednesday.
The Shenyuncun project passed quality tests by the city s housing authority May 14, said Huang, an engineer with the city s housing project management office. Construction of the buildings met design requirements, he said.
Improper interior decorations such as digging holes in walls were found during the investigation and experts thought it would lead to leaking.
Liu Junyi, deputy chief of the city s quality supervision office, said cracks were found in the same part of a building in No. 14 where wiring was located and the walls were comparatively fragile.
Liu said the cracks mostly were where the wires had been installed.
The authority promised to repair the cracks.
Homes in Shenyuncun were sold for 4,000 yuan (US$600) per square meter to low-income families. The average cost of housing in Shenzhen is now around 20,000 yuan per square meter.
There are 3,735 apartments in Shenyuncun. So far, 322 households had moved in. (Tina Chen)
