FOUR groups of huge sail-shaped LED screens at the spell-binding opening ceremony of the Asian Games on Haixinsha Island in the provincial capital of Guangzhou on Friday were made in Shenzhen, it was reported Saturday.

The four-and-a-half-hour ceremony started with trademark fireworks, but the 37,000 capacity crowd was up on its feet when 1,320 teenagers from the Shaolinta Gully Kung Fu School in Central Henan's Dengfeng descended with giant LED screens as the backdrop.

The 8,000-sqm screens, made up of the world's largest hanging LED screens, 83m in height and 36m in width, were created by more than 200 designers from Shenzhen LED companies, Qinghua University Shenzhen Research Institute, Shenzhen University and Shenzhen Optical Association.

LED technology is regarded as one of the "greenest" 21st century light sources thanks to its brightness, efficiency and durability.

Another Shenzhen firm, China Construction Steel Structure Shenzhen, built the 30,000-seater arena specifically for the ceremony on Haixinsha, an island in the Pearl River. The arena was completed in three months.

The 800 walkie-talkies used to coordinate the ceremony were produced by Shenzhen Hytera Communications Co.
