Dogs killed for eateries

DOG owners in the city have been warned against poachers who kill stray or pet dogs to sell them to eateries for the winter season.

One man, Zhu, told Thursday s Daily Sunshine that his father was walking their pet dog in Minzhi Subdistrict, Bao an District, on Tuesday when the dog was hit in the front leg by a flying needle and died at the scene.

The dog was buried beside Bulong Road but, when Zhu returned two hours later, he found the dog s body had been dug up and taken away.

Zhu said he suspected that someone had sold it to a restaurant.

Workers at a construction site on Bulong Road said they saw three men dig up the dog and take it away.

Zhu s neighbors said they had lost five dogs since November.

A 15-kilogram dog could fetch 400 to 500 yuan (US$60-75) at market, an investigation conducted by Daily Sunshine reporters found.

Head of the city s animal health monitoring station, Feng Weiquan, said sodium cyanide is usually used to poison dogs, which die almost instantly. It s harmful to eat the meat of poisoned dogs and high temperatures [in cooking] would not reduce the potency of the poison, Feng said.

He warned people against eating dog meat from suspicious sources.
