NO destructive earthquakes will hit Shenzhen or other areas of Guangdong Province, the Seismological Station of Guangdong said following a minor quake that hit the city Friday.

Friday s quake measured 2.8 on the Richter scale with the epicenter at 22.5 degrees north and 113.9 degrees east, at Dananshan Mountain. The quake occurred at a depth of about 23 kilometers.

The ground shook for a couple of seconds, said Liu Wei, a local media worker.

People in Pearl River Delta regions including Hong Kong also felt the tremor.

No casualties were reported.

Officials with the provincial seismological station said they would monitor earthquakes closely and take contingency measures in the event of any signs of a forthcoming quake.

Although Shenzhen lies in the middle of the southeast coastal seismic zone, no major earthquakes have hit Shenzhen in the past 400 years, the city s emergency office said.

Three fracture zones have been detected in Shenzhen by the seismological department. These are the Henggang-Luohu zone, the Liantang zone and the Wentang-Guanlan zone. Friday s quake didn t occur in either of the zones, the office said. (SD News)
