Fire hazard checks

THE city s firefighting authority has launched a citywide inspection of construction sites for fire hazards following the blaze that swept through a downtown apartment in Shanghai, killing at least 53 people. Authorities will also check whether electricians and welders working at construction sites are certified.

Airport roadworks

RENOVATION work on a branch road at Shenzhen International Airport has been completed, with the road opening to traffic on a trial basis Tuesday. Starting at the UPS pan-Asia air transportation center and connecting with Bao an Boulevard and National Highway 107, the 1.5-kilometer, four-lane road has a designated speed limit of 40 kilometers per hour and is expected to help improve the airport s freight support capabilities, transport authorities said.

Another branch road at the airport, with a length of 854 meters, is scheduled to open to traffic at the end of the year.

Injury insurance

AUTHORITIES in Shenzhen are considering providing commercial insurance to cover domestic helpers work-related medical expenses.

There are about 900,000 domestic helpers in Shenzhen, most of whom are employed by households. The majority do not have hukou (permanent residence permits), making them ineligible for social security insurance.

Premiums for commercial insurance, at about 400 yuan (US$60) a month, would be shared by the domestic service agency, the employer and the domestic helper.

Medical insurance

AN additional 15 medical institutions and 28 pharmacies in Shenzhen have been granted the right to charge expenses to individual medical insurance accounts.

Basketball court

THE only basketball court in Minle, Bao an District, has remained closed since a man was killed by lightning while playing basketball there in July, causing nearby residents to complain.

Minzhi Subdistrict Office officials said they would ask the community work station to check the venue and reopen it after ensuring that the facilities were safe.
