Illegal cabs
A TOTAL of 34 people had been detained for allegedly operating illegal taxis since a citywide crackdown on rampant illegal operations was launched Nov. 8, transport authorities said Monday. About 2,011 vehicles including electric bikes and motorcycles had been confiscated.
Thieves caught
TWO thieves were caught red-handed while waiting for accomplices to help move cables they had stolen from a warehouse in Longhua Subdistrict, Bao an District. They admitted having stolen the cables, which they found too heavy to carry away.
False report
A MAN was detained by police for allegedly making a false report claiming he had been robbed.
The man, identified as Li, told police he had fallen into debt through gambling, and was forced by two loan sharks to take 16,000 yuan (US$2,409) from his bank account to repay the debt. In an attempt to conceal what had happened, Li lied to his wife and made the false report to officers at Yousong Police Station in Bao an District.
Designers in demand
SOME 80 enterprises in the city s creative cultural industries took part in a job fair at Shenzhen Institute of Technology on Monday, offering 285 vacancies with an average monthly salary of more than 2,500 yuan. The job fair targeted 134 of the institute s graduates in applied design. Sixty enterprises participated in the job fair last year, compared to 40 in 2008, a clear signal of growing demand for professional designers.
Woman saved
A POLICE officer caught and saved the life of a woman who jumped off a footbridge in Nanshan District on Saturday night. The 19-year-old woman, who was not identified, was eight months pregnant and said she had been dumped by her boyfriend. Both the woman and the unborn child were well, doctors at Xili Hospital said Monday.
Illegal advertising
AUTHORITIES in Longgang District have taken down 39 large advertising billboards since a campaign against illegal advertising was launched in the district in October.
Extortionists caught
THREE men were detained by Bao an police for allegedly trying to extort money from a driver after deliberately ramming his car.
The driver, named Lai, called police at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, saying he and his colleagues had been stopped by three strangers in Bao an who demanded 10,000 yuan following a collision.
