Police attacked
FOUR men were detained for allegedly attacking a police officer checking for drink-driving violations Sunday evening in Shiyan Subdistrict, Bao an District. A driver, Fan Yan, and three others attacked the officer when Fan was asked to take a breath test.
The officer was slightly injured, police said.
New traffic penalty
POLICE yesterday introduced a fine of 500 yuan (US$75) for motorists who refuse to move their vehicles following minor accidents and cause traffic jams. Minor accidents refer to those that don t cause injuries or fatalities, police said.
Police will record accident scenes using video cameras and ask motorists to leave the road to agree on compensation claims. It is hoped the measure will reduce traffic jams, with the number of vehicles on the city s roads now exceeding 1.9 million. Police receive an average of 1,494 accident reports every day, with 80 percent being minor collisions.
Gas main broken
AN underground gas main at Huigangmingyuan housing estate in Futian District was ruptured yesterday afternoon by construction work on a nearby Metro line, cutting off the estate s gas supply. No casualties were reported. Technicians from Shenzhen Gas Group repaired the main late last night.
Ship identification
SHENZHEN Airport Exit and Entry Inspection Station has begun using an automatic identification system (AIS) to track and identify vessels entering and leaving Fuyong Port. The move was taken to bolster security for the Asian Games. In the week between Sept. 9-15, the system had monitored 200 ferries in real time.
