A TOTAL of 53 foreigners participated in the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) at Shenzhen American International School in Nanshan District on Sunday.
It was the first time the test, a national standard test to assess the Chinese language proficiency of non-native speakers, had been conducted in the city, yesterday s Shenzhen Economic Daily reported.
The examinees were mainly from South Korea, Japan, the United States, Spain and Germany, living in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Hong Kong and Dongguan.
One-third were high-school students applying for Chinese universities. Another 30 percent were university students who needed the results to graduate, while the rest were staff with international companies, the school said.
The HSK is a comprehensive test at various levels for Chinese learners, including HSK Basic, HSK Elementary-Intermediate and HSK Advanced. So far, the HSK has been taken by millions of examinees from more than 120 countries.
Shenzhen American International School was the only examination hall approved to conduct the test in Shenzhen. The second test will be held Dec. 5, for which there have so far been more than 100 applicants, the school said.
