WORK on 20 pavement projects along Shenhui Road in Longgang District has been halted, raising doubts that roadworks being done in conjunction will be completed on time.
The contractor, Shenzhen Metro Line 3 Investment Co., claimed residents and businesses along the road had deliberately hampered construction efforts.
The difficulties stemmed from unsettled compensation, shrinking parking space and a shortage of access roads, a company engineer identified as Wang told yesterday s Daily Sunshine.
Because Shenhui Road and its pavements had been expanded, parking space in front of the stores along the roads had shrunk, which many stores feared could affect business.
According to the construction plan, the pavement on each side of the road ought to be 6 meters wide, but several stores had intervened to ask workers to tailor the pavement to their requirements. One furniture store demanded workers surface the pavement with concrete instead of bricks to allow for car parking, Wang said. A restaurant asked workers to raise the height of the pavement and build steps at either end of the paving.
The requirements are unacceptable and more than 10 projects were halted by similar requests, Wang said.
Some parts of the pavement had been demolished by businesses to allow vehicle access to stores on Shenhui Road. Some stores had even demolished greenery belts, pulled out trees and removed brick paving.
No parking spaces means no business, one unidentified store owner said, expressing hopes that the government would consider the interests of store owners. (Han Ximin)
