Cigarette smuggling
HUANGGANG Checkpoint has uncovered four cases of cigarette smuggling this year, each involving more than 1,000 cartons cigarettes. In the latest case, the department seized almost 1,800 cartons smuggled cigarettes, the biggest haul this year.
Study terminals
OVER 20 multi-media information terminals for English learning have been installed in residential communities in Nanshan District. Residents can take up basic oral English courses through the terminals. More terminals will be placed in parks and commercial areas throughout the city. The terminals have been installed to encourage residents to speak English to welcome the Universiade next year.
Appeal for the poor
THE European Chamber in China held a charity gala dinner in Nanshan District on Saturday to call for donations from members to support the education of poverty-stricken children in Sichuan and Gansu Provinces. The dinner celebrated the 10th anniversary of the European Chamber in China. An office of the chamber was established in Shenzhen three years ago.
Delay ends
AN expectant mother who was two weeks overdue but had refused to have the birth induced delivered the baby Saturday. The woman had refused to allow doctors to induce the birth until her husband was released from a labor camp.
Huang Chuanxia, 27, and the baby were both well in Longgang No. 2 People s Hospital. Huang s husband, Huang Zhenbo, was detained Oct. 30 for gambling and has been ordered to serve a one-year term. The new mother wanted her husband to witness the birth of their child.
Worker injured
A WORKER was in critical condition after he was hit on the head by a steel pipe that fell 30 meters from a crane on a construction site in Xinzhou in Futian District on Friday. The worker, identified only as Wang, 38, was wearing a safety helmet at the time of the accident at the Jiazhou Fuyuan housing estate. He is still in a coma and police are investigating.
Fatal fall
A DRIVER was killed when his car was hit by an object that fell from a container truck on Beihuan Boulevard near the Qiaoxiang Flyover early Saturday. The truck lost control and rammed into the median strip when the object fell. According to the city s traffic police bureau, no other injuries were reported. Police are investigating.
