A 39-year-old woman yesterday gave birth to a baby whose marrow is needed to save her elder son who suffers from leukemia, Chinese-language media reported Thursday.

Wu Xiaoqiong decided to have another child last year when she discovered that neither her marrow nor her husband's matched the blood of her 15-year-old son, Tang Yijin, the Shenzhen Economic Daily said.

Tang was diagnosed with leukemia last summer when he returned to his hometown in Guangxi after visiting his parents who work in Shenzhen.

"He had complained about the pain in his knees when he was still in Shenzhen with us, but we never thought it could be a sympton of leukemia and didn't take it seriously," said Tang Qunxiang, the teenager's father.

He said he took him to hospital after the teenager couldn't stand the pain any more.

After failing to find matching marrow for Tang Yijin, the couple decided to have another child in an effort to save the teenager's life.

"I am aware of the risk (of being pregnant at aged 39)," said Wu at Cihai Women's and Children's Hospital in Longgang District. "But we have to save him."

Tang Yijin is now at Beijing University Shenzhen Hospital awaiting a bone marrow transplant.
