A staff member of a shop conducting illegal foreign currency exchange is detained in possession of HK$100,000 (US$12,900) and 4,000 yuan (US$598) in Luohu District yesterday. A total of 36 people were apprehended during raids on 48 shops near Luohu Checkpoint and on Nanyuan Road in Futian District. Five shops were closed for allegedly being involved in illegal foreign currency exchange. A growing number of grocery shops near the Shenzhen-Hong Kong checkpoints were reported to be involved in foreign currency exchange without a proper license with the yuan expected to appreciate.
